Although Republican Assemblyman Mike Duvall quickly resigned from office over a raunchy sex scandal, he now claims that he never admitted to having extramarital affairs and implies that he was only trash talking. Duvall, a Christian conservative who often preached “moral values,” was caught on tape, bragging about having sex with two different women, one of whom reportedly was an energy lobbyist. Duvall apparently thought a capitol building microphone was turned off when he boasted of spanking one of the women and having sex with the other. But then after he resigned, he posted a carefully worded statement on this website, claiming his “offense” was “engaging in inappropriate story-telling,” and that he never actually admitted to having affairs with the women.
Duvall’s strange denial may have had less to do with being exposed as a hypocrite than over possible concerns that he could be charged with trading sex for votes or lucrative contracts. Before resigning, he was the vice chair of the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Commerce, which overseas contracts for power supply to California, and one of the women that he bragged about having sex with is reportedly a lobbyist for Sempra, a leading energy company. That lobbyist, however, has denied having sex with Duvall.
