Schwarzenegger on the Brink

Medianews writer Steven Harmon has a nice piece that tries to figure out if Arnold Schwarzenegger is playing a complicated game that will force a budget consensus from both Dems and Republicans in the state legislature, or if he’s grandstanding on frivolous issues and will go down as the governor who presided over the worst financial crisis in California history. There’s evidence, or at least arguments, for both interpretations. On the one hand, Republicans are making noises about acceding to tax hikes, and Schwarzenegger may have had to veto the all-Democratic budget proposal to give the Republicans time to come around and save face. On the other hand, there’s only enough cash on hand to keep the government running for one more month, and Schwarzenegger may be playing games with people’s lives. We aggregate, you decide.
