With taste and attention to detail far beyond his years, Ryan Hemsworth is the type of producer who can compile the most obscure and wonky source material and weave it together into a tapestry that’s both elegant and entertaining. Samples on his new EP are as disparate as epic choral pieces and Elliott Smith’s “Everything Means Nothing to Me”, but he’s also not above throwing in bits from a rapper’s home-recorded iPhone freestyle. Best of all, Hemsworth isn’t afraid of brassy synthesizers, drum machines, and trap rap beats, either.
While arguably isolated out in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Hemsworth has spent the last two years laser-focused on his music, cultivating links to the Bay Area and earning international recognition as a versatile young producer. With Last Words, Hemsworth leaves his initial experimentation behind and clocks in with an inspiring personal best, both in style and technique.
Back in February 2011, Hemsworth’s first noteworthy singles sounded different. Among them were a funky contribution to DIY label Crash Symbols’ Dope Valley Fuck compilation, and a mellowed-out track featuring East Oakland rapper Shady Blaze, with a beat that heavily sampled the Flaming Lips’ “Dreamin.”
A few mixtapes and a whole lot of free rap beats later, Hemsworth is out with his first official release — a fine reward for his magnanimity and hard work. Los Angeles electronic crew Wedidit has championed the album, and it’s one of the label’s best pickups to date. The five-track EP comes complete with four complementary remixes, including a sluggish Shlohmo edit and dance adornments from Mad Decent producer Baauer. (Wedidit)
