.Oakland Dispensary Group Tidewater Finds a Home

Another medical marijuana dispensary is set to open in Oakland now that it has found a suitable home.

The Tribune reported that Oakland officials signed off on 3007 Telegraph Avenue as the new home for a dispensary run by Tidewater Patients Group, “which has strong ties to Carlos Plazola, a one-time aide to former Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente.”

Oakland officials green-lighted Tidewater’s dispensary permit in 2012 but rejected proposed locations near the Oakland estuary and on Franklin Street.

Tidewater is one of four new dispensaries Oakland approved last year, increasing the number of permitted city dispensaries from four to eight. Permittees, however, have struggled to find locations as landlords remain spooked about federal forfeiture attempts. Neighborhood groups have also opposed dispensaries similar to the way they block liquor stores or fast food franchises. Despite the hassles, new dispensaries Blum opened at 578 West Grand Avenue and Magnolia Wellness opened at 161 Adeline Street.
