Chip Johnson Swings Away at Dellums Again

When Ron Dellums introduced Robert Bobb’s report on Oakland city government with a discourse on how the strong mayor setup was incompatible with the city charter, we thought, “This guy’s trying to pretend the charter has left him powerless, and that’s why he hasn’t done anything.” Today, Chip Johnson says as much in his column. “It’s almost as if Dellums was suggesting that charter ambiguity has hampered his role as the head of government,” he writes. “Are you kidding? The void of leadership in Oakland has nothing to do with a specific government alignment. It’s a red herring, the old political two-step, a bob-and-weave. And it’s a lame-o excuse. It’s his erratic absences from the office, lack of focus and organization that have defined his performance.” Johnson also notes the absurdity of needing an official report to recommend that the mayor show up for work at 9 am. But maybe the mayor is just setting the stage for his successor; all he or she needs to do is be at the desk when the business day starts, and the city will hail him or her as a friggin’ workhorse. Really, Ron, that’s so generous of you.
