Yesterday’s BART Cop Rally Fairly Peaceful

The Oakland Tribune has a terrific blow-by-blow of yesterday’s downtown Oakland demonstration, starting with the reaction hours earlier to the arrest of former BART cop Johannes Mehserle, who killed Oscar Grant early New Year’s Day. The Trib‘s writers walk us through the whole day: the merchants and government employees packing up early; the initial rally calling out the names of victims of police violence; march to the district attorney’s office; the return to City Hall; and the lingering protesters who smashed a few windows before being dispersed. In its dry, just-the-facts reporting, it conveys a sense of tension building throughout the day, only to dissipate as the feared violence never breaks out. Read the whole thing; it’s a nice format-buster for the Trib.
