Swell Czech

Lenka Dusilova stripped down in Berkeley.

Lenka Dusilova has had a long career for someone so young. In her teens and early twenties, she led two popular award-nominated bands; she later collaborated with Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman, and had two solo records sell gold. What, you haven’t heard of her? Well, that might because the bulk of her fame is in her home country, the Czech Republic. And that might be about to change. Making her second stop in Berkeley this Wednesday night, the 29-year-old has left behind most of her last band, retaining only guitarist Martin Ledvina for her acoustic sets. “We had a six-piece rock band called Secretion until May,” Dusilova said via e-mail, “but since then we prefer this sort of naked shape. It is a pretty extreme change, but I love it.”

Dusilova and Ledvina will be recording in San Francisco while they’re here, working with producer Ben Yonas beginning in mid-November. Those who may be familiar with Dusilova’s prior work, solo or with Secretion, should prepare themselves for a more classically folky feel. “The idea of the album is to focus on the human voice and other natural acoustic colors,” she says. “We will probably add bass, drum, and some simple electronics. Everything will come out of the atmosphere of each song; that’s actually very important to me.” But her compositions have always shown the wide range of her influences, ranging from trip-hop jams to bluesy PJ Harvey yowlers to, in the case of “Telo,” a strange combination of cabaret torch song and brutal art-rock harangue. So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to hear Dusilova cooing all radio-ready romantic-like over brushed drums and acoustic strums on “Last One Standing,” her new single: “I like music that breaks up my momentary mood. It’s a lot of music because I’m very moody.”

Dusilova and Ledvina, along with baritone guitarist Gawain Matthews, will play Blake’s (2367 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) Wednesday with Company Car, Hazerfan, and Shawn Brown opening. Show starts at 8:30 p.m., and cover is $4. In addition, Facing New York goes on at midnight as part of its month-long, no-cover residency at Blake’s.
