.Sushi for Dinner? Think Again

If you’re one of the many Californians who enjoy fresh salmon or tuna sushi, you might want to reconsider your eating habits. In addition to a recent report that the mercury level in tuna sushi is dangerously higher than consumers were aware of (see NYT article here), now the word is that salmon levels along the Pacific Coast are so low that salmon season will be shut down completely this year, barring an emergency exception, reports the Chronicle. While the move would drive up the cost of salmon and jeopardize the jobs of nearly 1,000 commerical fisherman, representatives from the Pacific Fishery Management Council say the move is necessary in light of record low spawing numbers. The ban on fishing salmon would also extend to recreational fishers. The council will consider various options for managing the fishery on Friday.
