OVVN’s (pronounced “own”) music is austere, creepy, and discordant — and bandleader Ethan Jayne likes it that way. OVVN Looks for Notes that Hate Each Other
[jump] The record, which is already streaming on BandCamp, deftly combines strains of noise and doom metal. Pitch-shifted vocals, atonal guitar playing, and rumbling bass work together create a brutal alchemy of sound.

“Taking a chance on two notes that hate each other; not necessarily having a chorus, or any kind of anchor, that could keep you attached to reality or what you think a song should do — those are the things I like to do,” Jayne described his songwriting process in an interview with the Express earlier this year.
The Express has the exclusive on OVVN’s new video for “Sores,” a track off I Love Myself that explores “hearsay and the way information spins out of control on the internet, trying to plug up one too many holes in a sinking ship,” as Jayne put in an email.
The ominous video is part torture scene and part religious sacrament with plenty of suspense to keep viewers on edge. Watch below and catch OVVN live at Santo Recording (2565 West Street, Oakland) at 8 p.m. for their record release show with support from Healers and Freak Heat Waves.
