Oakland Tribune: Affirming Torture

The Oakland Tribune published an op-ed over the weekend by notorious UC Berkeley law school professor John Yoo, author of the infamous “Torture Memos.” Actually, it was Yoo’s first regular column for the Philadelphia Inquirer repurposed as an op-ed. As we noted earlier, Yoo is now a paid columnist for the Inquirer and his first piece criticized President Obama for saying he intended to choose a Supreme Court justice who can empathize with people, as a opposed to just viewing the law as an abstract concept. It’s bad enough that the Inquirer is paying the man who authorized torture and brought shame upon the nation and is giving him a forum to regularly spout off his right-wing opinions. But it’s even worse to have Yoo’s hometown paper republish his work, and treat him as if he’s some sort of legitimate political voice — as opposed to the disgraced public figure he really is.
