UC Berkeley has delayed its announcement set for today — about the fate of five its sports teams, the AP (and others) are reporting. Chancellor Robert Birgeneau was expected to announce today whether the estimated $15 million raised through grassroots fund-raising efforts would be enough to save the five programs — baseball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and rugby —currently on the chopping block. But a spokesman for the university said the statement wouldn’t be coming today — and, moreover, that he wasn’t sure if it’d come tomorrow, either. No word on whether any of this has anything to do with the recent revelation that cutting the teams could amount to a Title IX violation.
