Gilles Peterson

BBC Sessions [Live]

Famed Bar Rumba waxslinger and British DJ Peterson is probably a really cool guy — if nothing else, he has one of the best hipster music shows on BBC Radio One, fattened with exclusive tracks by icons like Beck, Amp Fiddler, and Björk. He compiles his top 24 for the two-disc BBC Sessions, which naturally boasts enough moments of supreme gorgeousness to score Peterson more cred points. Still, most of these sounds remain within the purview of acid jazz — not in the psychedelic, sprawling, Miles Davis sense of the term, but rather the watered-down, conventional version popularized by Om Records and its UK-based spiritual cousins. In the end, Peterson’s hipster cachet isn’t enough to compensate for his lack of musical depth: Once the acid wears off, you might be asking for the DJ’s home address so you can hunt him down and shoot him.
