Dar + Luz translates to “to give birth,” but it can also be thought of as a way to re-imagine yourself — an awakening, a re-birth. Three Bay Area artists, Yadira Cazares, Ave-Ameenah Long, and Alex Martinez hope to engage attendees in conversation as to what this term “Dar + Luz” truly means in a group show. Each artist is bringing a unique medium through which they explore the central thesis of the show: Cazares’ paintings live in resin on plexiglass while Long uses film photography to highlight the beautiful survival of the African diaspora and nod to the Harlem Renaissance in her style. Martinez is a mixed media artist who presents works that use fiber and ornamentation for her pieces. The exhibit is located in Oakland, but nowhere near the Art Murmur stretch. Galeria Beso Maya (Mayan Kiss Gallery) is located in the heart of the Dimond District, off Fruitvale Avenue and Interstate 580.
