Comets on Fire

Avatar

Remember the time you decided to blast Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, and the Stooges from three separate stereos in your room? If you don’t, it’s because of the drugs. Well Santa Cruz’ Comets on Fire was with you on that one. Give a listen to Avatar — the follow-up to its 2004 breakthrough on Sub Pop, Blue Cathedral — and you’ll achieve the same effect without smoking or snorting a damn thing. This is one blown-out, psychedelic piece of rock fury processed for maximum efficiency. The latter half of eight-minute opener “Dogwood Rust” simply drones with Hammond organ and tangled lead guitars. “Holy Teeth” is totally unhinged. Mellower blues number “Lucifer’s Memory” graciously offers a chance to catch your ears ringing. Grow your hair long, buy a dozen Zippos, practice your metal sign — do what you gotta do. Because this shit don’t mess around.
