Chip Johnson: Dellums’ Weaknesses Rear Again

Chron columnist Chip Johnson has another tasty morsel this morning, detailing how Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums’ dithering leadership style has left city government floundering. First there’s the little matter of finding the new city administrator, a task Dellums has ostensibly had since Deborah Edgerly declared her intention to leave early this year. How’s the search going? It ain’t. Meanwhile, Dellums has split the job between his pal Dan Lindheim and former city manager Robert Bobb. This arrangement has gotten us the worst of both worlds: Bobb is clearly the man with the gravitas and aptitude for the job, but since he’s a consultant, he only comes in a few days a month. “The arrangement leaves Lindheim feeling undermined and Bobb in limbo, the sources say, while city residents are without leadership or clear direction,” Johnson writes. Second, Dellums just can’t bring himself to downsize his personal staff, even though the city faces a massive budget deficit. Time for a little action, mister mayor. Or would you rather retire to Georgetown again? We’ll take that too.
