Best Underground Dance Party

Wine & Bowties

First and foremost, Wine & Bowties is an online culture magazine. Run by founders Max Gibson and Will Bundy with help from a gang of witty contributors, it might be the best local publication with a budget of zero dollars and a lot of love for local music and art. But aside from covering culture online, the collective also throws events in real life. Some are documentary screenings, some are lectures, and others are exceptional dance parties in huge venues. These are the best Oakland events to be seen at if you’re young, hip, and enjoy rap music. They’re always at a different spot, but “warehouse” is a common descriptor. The last W&B party, the third edition of its epic “Feels” series, took place at American Steel Studios in West Oakland and boasted musical guests The Internet, Daghe, and Tia NoMore. Along with music, many W&B parties also feature work by local visual artists, along with zines, merchandise, and street food. Sometimes even the beer is local. They’re just underground enough to maintain a sense of cool, but inclusive enough to ensure a packed dance floor. Look out for them every few months. They’re never to be missed.
