It’s not the biggest gym in the East Bay but it might be the most intense. The Salesian High Chieftans play some of the best basketball in the state, and if you attend a home game you will find yourself closer to the game than when you laced them up yourself. The bandbox of a gym extends its bleachers all the way down to the sidelines. That means that folks in the first row are actually partially on the court. When players need to inbound passes they may need you to move your hot dog and soda. The gym gets crowded and it gets loud; the pep band sits on the stage of the one side of the facility that isn’t already filled with people and blasts out tunes to fire up the already-roaring audience. Not only can you say you’ve seen the best that prep basketball has to offer, but you can say it stepped on your toes as well.
