Don’t let this bar’s rough exterior deceive you. Beyond the peeling paint façade is a backyard patio that’s easy to overlook even when you’re inside the barroom. Step outside, and you’ll feel like you’ve just walked through a closet and found Narnia. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it’s still a nice place to sip craft cocktails under a canopy of redwood trees on the edge of Oakland’s Uptown district. A string of lights adds ambiance to summer nights, and bench seating provides ample opportunity to chat with your fellow patrons (or not). Plus, there are high-top tables for conversations that require intimacy. Occasionally, the smell of barbecue wafts through the air when the owner, Ali Tahsini, invites food vendors to set up shop. As if that weren’t incentive enough, the unpretentious atmosphere and diverse clientele make this bar a true neighborhood gem.
