Moderne Eye in Oakland’s Rockridge district isn’t your typical snooty boutique. There are no uptight clerks to look down their nose at you if you’re not hip to the latest fashion trends. Indeed, Moderne Eye’s rep for over-the-top customer service is something of a local legend. Just one example: A longtime customer ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses at a few weeks before a hiking vacation in Kauai. But an insurance glitch delayed the sunglasses, and he was convinced they wouldn’t arrive on time for the trip. A few hours before leaving for the airport, the customer got a surprise call. It was one of Moderne Eye’s staff members, calling on her day off, to say the sunglasses were in. She then delivered them to the customer’s house as he was about to depart. How’s that for service?
