Sure, a couple of Cal swimmers will represent at the Athens Olympics, and a handful of local hoops stars are worthy of acknowledgment as usual, but this year we’ve gone off the beaten path to award Best Amateur Athlete to the ever-colorful Kristina Thorson, aka “Goth Girl.” Thorson is Cal’s sophomore softball pitcher, originally from the Seattle area, who is unnerving her opponents both with her blazing fast ball and her Emily-esque hairdo and makeup. That’s right: A goth chick in sports — and she’s kicking some jock ass. As of this writing, her earned run average was just 0.93, and she’d struck out 141 batters in 142 innings pitched. While compiling a 17-2 record for the No. 4-ranked Bears this season, she has given up only fifteen walks, and those hitting against her have averaged a very unathletic .164. So you go, Goth Girl. Go about things the right way. You are human and you need to be loved. Just like everybody else does.
