Oregon poet Emily Carr’s new book, Whosoever Has Let a Minotaur Enter Them, Or a Sonnet—, is a series of love poems about getting a divorce. They’re poems about falling out of a love with a person and falling into love with the rest of the world again. But the words are not simply sentimental or nature-worshipping. Rather, they’re rich and vital — skipping between introversion and radical extroversion with every line. On Monday, May 9, at 6 p.m., McSweeney’s will be holding a release event for the new book at Woods Bar & Brewery (1701 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). Carr will read and drinks will be imbibed. It’s unclear what else will occur, but the event description promises “intriguing secrets and surprises.” Normally, I wouldn’t advise taking mysterious lineup promises at face value, but knowing McSweeney’s, they’ll like deliver something unexpected.
