Bad Table

Where waiters and diners tell tales.

I have worked in the restaurant industry for most of my life. At my first job as a server, working at a diner, I did something I am horribly ashamed of. This is the worst thing I have ever done as a server: I was waiting on what appeared to be an older couple with their adult son, who sat between them. The father ordered for all of them, and ordered oatmeal for his son. After coming back to check on them after having dropped off their food, I noticed the son was clutching his spoon in his fist and stirring the oatmeal quite vigorously. I, young, and trying to be cute and sassy, said something to the effect of: “I thought only children are supposed to play with their food like that!” The table falls completely silent, the parents look up at me with shock on their faces, then the son looks up at me, and I realize: he’s retarded! I mumbled something and did my best to avoid them the rest of their meal. I feel so bad! This happened ten years ago and still makes me wince. Please do not use my name.
