12:30 p.m. Wednesday: Best Burrito — or Biggest, What’s the Difference?

Taqueria San Jose

In 1997, in Rengstroff Park in Mountain View, Taqueria La Costeña set a record for the world’s longest burrito. It was 3,500 feet of tortillas stuffed with rice, beans, chorizo, and salsas. Now finishing even a small fraction of that sucka would likely kill you, but if you’re ravenous and on the lookout for the perfect grab-and-run feast — or you want to stick around and enjoy your meal slowly — you can’t go wrong with Taqueria San Jose. Located in Oakland’s Fruitvale District, San Jose’s burrito is a worthwhile investment. For around four bucks you get a fat one with pinto beans de la oya (from the pot, not refried), fluffy Spanish rice, salsa fresca, and a choice of meats from the open grill. Known for the biggest tortillas in town, Taqueria San Jose is a cavernous space with bright Mexican decor, a booming jukebox, and an outdoor patio. Add to that a beer, soda, or freshly squeezed carrot or orange juice, and buen provecho! (good appetite). You’ll need it. Just don’t expect to return to work without sneaking a little siesta.
