.10 p.m. Every Other Friday: Best Live Mixmaster

Joe Quixx at Radio Bar

After the karaoke, you may still have time to make it to downtown Oakland’s Radio Bar. While DJ Shadow gets all the press, Joe Quixx and his partner the Specialist press their own 45s of old ’60s records chopped up in a drum machine, the last of which sold out its run of five hundred copies in two weeks. Joe Quixx’s radio show on Stanford’s KZSU was a mainstay for a lot of beatheads, and now you too can join in the fun as he relives the magic every other Friday night at Radio. Well, it’s not exactly the same magic — instead of straight hip-hop and funk, he mixes in everything from the Talking Heads to Egyptian Lover, with a typical sequence going from Liquid Liquid’s “Cavern” into Can’s “I’m So Green” and back to Madonna’s “Into the Groove.” Goddamn, that DJ made my day.
