Looks like the OPD search warrant scandal has its first casualty. Police officials have informed Officer Karla Rush that she’s out of a job, although she gets to spend months appealing the decision. According to the Trib, Rush is at the center of the scandal, having written some 30 phony statements that were used to obtain search warrants and haul mostly East Oakland residents off to the pokey. Numerous people have already been released from state prison, and two federal lawsuits have been filed against the city. Here’s our favorite line in the piece: “While the district attorney’s office has begun to fight to salvage some of the warrants in question, any warrant issued based on affidavits written by Rush have been dropped without question.” Nothing like the well-placed understatement to drive a point home.
