.Most Venerable Pro Sports Figure

Al Attles

When the Philadelphia Warriors made the cross-country move to San Francisco in 1962, their roster included a 26-year-old guard named Al Attles. He was there when they made the shorter move to Oakland in 1971; when they won their only NBA title in 1975 (as coach); when they climbed back to respectability in the Eighties (as general manager); and in various front-office capacities ever since, including his current gig as “Warriors Legend & Ambassador.” At 51 years and counting, his continuous affiliation with the team is the longest of any current NBA employee. With Attles still going strong, it seems like the biggest threat to his claim as the longest-tenured pro sports figure in the East Bay is geographic: the Warriors’ planned move back to San Francisco. Here’s hoping the longtime Oakland resident can talk the team’s ownership into keeping his commute short.
