D.A.I.S.Y. rage

After dropping half of her moniker, nineteen-year-old Daytona Beach Web 2.0 rapper Kitty Pryde is now just Kitty — not that her persona ever relied much on social graces. I’m greasier than pizza, she spits in “Ay Shawty” on her new EP, D.A.I.S.Y. rage, eight tracks that are heavy on spacey beats and soulful vocals in which Kitty upbraids her critics one second and dissolves into giggles the next.

D.A.I.S.Y. rage shows Kitty has matured, but not enough to outgrow her Tumblr origins: She still peppers her verses with pop-culture references (Why the fuck you undercut me like Skrillex hair) and fangirl tributes (the EP’s title references De La Soul’s “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” and “R.R.E.A.M.” was inspired by the Wu-Tang Clan). On “Dead Island,” a sparkly track that samples drums from the oft-sampled “Pon de Floor” by Major Lazer, Kitty raps with a vicious/precious Nicki Minaj-style flow: Bitch, draw your eyebrows on, then talk to me. But she frequently pulls back to show she cares what we think: When San Jose rapper Antwon alludes to doing drugs in his guest verse on “Scout Finch Bitch,” Kitty cuts in, No, mom, don’t listen to ‘Twon/Nobody has cocaine on ’em.

A lot of the hate directed at Kitty undoubtedly comes from people judging her as yet another shit-talking, white female rapper à la Kreayshawn and Ke$ha. D.A.I.S.Y. rage is proof there’s more to Kitty than her Internet image: One, the girl can actually rap; and two, beneath the catchy frivolity, she’s capable of some solid and reflective writing. What makes Kitty so likable is that she uses hip-hop to make fun of herself (“Skrillionaire”), to talk about being vulnerable around her no-good crushes (“Hittin Lix”), and to downplay the hyperbole of social drama (“Unfollowed”) — of course, with the gangsta ode to cough syrup thrown in.
