It seems that the West Berkeley U-Haul is itching for a fight. First, citing complaints that the business had overstocked its lot with trucks and parked them up and down residential streets, the city revoked the branch’s permit to rent trucks. The West Berkeley branch responded by suing the city, but a judge upheld Berkeley’s power to revoke the use permit in January. Now, the Oakland Tribune reports, the city has sued to shut down the branch altogether, claiming that the outlet continues to park trucks nuts-to-butts along residential and commercial streets. Down at the business, the Trib adds, the proprietors have posted a sign: “Urgent! At this time, the city of Berkeley has chosen to deny you the right to obtain U-Haul services from this location. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. The immediate effect of this is to inconvenience and frustrate you. Longer term, it is causing more fossil fuel burned and carbon dioxide released into the air we all breathe. This is a political matter. We need your help.”
