.Tall Ships Come to Oakland

Local school kids and the public will get a taste of sailing on a tall ship when the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain dock at Oakland’s Jack London Square on March 6. The Washington is a full-scale reproduction of the first American vessel to visit North America’s west coast around 1788. During the ships’ eighteen-day visit, students will raise sails, sing sea shanties, and more. Full press release, including public viewing schedule, after the jump.

News Release: Students from 31 Bay Area Schools to Experience Tall Ship
Thrills in Oakland

Oakland, Calif. – Young people from across the Bay Area will raise sails, sing sea shanties, and learn about life on an 18th-century tall ship when the brig Lady Washington and topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain visit Oakland next month. The ships arrive at Jack London Square March 6, firing a cannon salute before welcoming the public and students during an 18-day visit.

The students come from 31 schools in 21 local communities, including Castro Valley, Piedmont, Oakland, Sacramento, Hayward, Grass Valley, San Jose, Pleasanton, Morgan Hill, Santa Rosa, Clovis, San Francisco, Paradise, Delhi, San Leandro, Danville, Felton, El Sobrante, Lafayette, Sebastopol, and Escalon.

Both tall ships will welcome the general public aboard for dockside tours on these dates and times: March 6-7, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; March 8,, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; March 11-14, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; March 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; March 18-21, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; March 22, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.

The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain have also scheduled
three-hour public sailings, including our popular Battle Sails, which
feature blazing cannons and close-quarters maneuvers between the ships.
Trips are scheduled for March 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, and 23, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
all days. Tickets for Battle Sails are $60 for adults, $50 for seniors,
students, and active military, and $40 for children under 12.

Our family-oriented Adventure Sails offer a hands-on opportunity to
experience tall ship lore and tradition. Trips are scheduled for March
9, 16, and 23, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. all days. Tickets for Adventure Sails
are $55 for adults, $45 for seniors, students, and active military, and
$35 for children under 12
