Social Eyes: Week of Jan. 8-14

THURSDAY, JAN. 8

INDIE

RAINBOW GIRLS

The Southern California indie band, Rainbow Girls, unspools well-crafted songs featuring simple acoustic sounds that flow like rivers, boil as would any water if heat were applied or ride along a surfrider’s dream wave. Their 2024 album, Haunting, captures it all in songs like “SMS to the Void,” “Spread Me Thin” and “Loser.” Placing Sabine McCalla on the same Freight stage with the Rainbow Girls sends this show into lofty territory. McCalla’s debut album, Don’t Call Me Baby, sports the full package: gospel, folk, soul, blues, R&B, classic rock and afro-beat. It might be the year’s finest combo of female voices. LOU FANCHER

FRIDAY, JAN. 9

JAZZ

SINNE EEG & JOSH NELSON: MUSIC AT THE MOVIES

Danish jazz vocalist Sinne Eeg plays a two-night run at the Sound Room with L.A. pianist Josh Nelson. Possessing a rich, burnished tone, she’s a powerhouse who combines effortless swing with a capacious improvisational imagination. The first night focuses on songs from films, with particular attention to tunes gleaned from the James Bond franchise. The second night features originals Eeg and Nelson have collaborated on. He’s a brilliant accompanist and composer best known for his six-year stint touring with Natalie Cole. Avidly sought out by vocalists, he can also be seen with Gaby Moreno, Freda Payne, Alicia Olatuja, Sara Gazarek and Oakland’s Kenny Washington. ANDREW GILBERT

INFO: Fri, 7:30pm, The Sound Room, 3022 Broadway, Oakland. $28.52. 510.708.9691

FRIDAY, JAN. 9

BRAZILIAN

CARLOS OLIVEIRA WITH THE BERKELEY CHORO ENSEMBLE

Dedicated to the spritely, virtuosic Brazilian instrumental tradition known as choro, the Berkeley Choro Ensemble has forged deep relationships with some of Brazil’s most celebrated choro artists. Featuring Rio-reared Oakland guitarist Ricardo Peixoto, percussionist Brian Rice, flutist Jane Lenoir and clarinetist Harvey Wainapel, the BCO gets a rare opportunity to revisit a program with the group’s original guitarist, Carlos Oliveira. A creative force during his Bay Area years who worked closely with Wainapel, including the Ambrosia project featuring piano great and NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron, Oliveira returned to Recife in 2012. – AG

INFO: Fri, 7pm, Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St., Berkeley. $20. 510.213.4292.

FRIDAY, JAN. 9

JAZZ

ETHAN OSTROW AND REMEE ASHLEY

The celebrated Berkeley High Jazz program gets a shoutout when pianist Ethan Ostrow and trombonist Remee Ashley come back home for a special performance alongside bassist Owen Storey and drummer Elliott Martens. Minneapolis-based Ostrow is fluent in R&B, funk, soul and jazz. Berkeley-native Ashley is also a composer and arranger who’s played the Apollo and Birdland, among many other venues. Ostrow’s playing and vocals range from a wistful rendering of the Carole King classic “So Far Away,” to seriously funked-up originals. Listen up and get down. JANIS HASHE

INFO: Fri, 8pm, The Back Room, 1984 Bonita Ave., Berkeley. $25. 510.654.3808.

SATURDAY, JAN. 10

METAL

CARTILAGE

Warning: Cartilage is not for the weak of heart. After all, they describe themselves as a “gore-soaked death grind from San Francisco,” and it’s 100% true. Their songs are only out-brutalized by their album art and live shows, both featuring plenty of blood. This year they celebrated their 10-year anniversary as a band, releasing the five-song EP, Tales From The Entrails: A Necrology. Vestige, Beheader and Frolic will join this repulsive party. So be ready for blast beats, guttural screams and plenty of headbanging. MAT WEIR

INFO: Sat, 8pm, Cornerstone, 2367 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley. $23. 510.214.8600.

SATURDAY, JAN. 10

PUNK

SWINGIN’ UTTERS

For more than three decades, the Swingin’ Utters have treated punk not as a phase, but as a long-term practice, one shaped by Bay Area streets, stubborn independence and a refusal to soften with age. Now they’re revered enough to inspire tribute albums and peer devotion. Their recent work sharpens the point: politically direct, musically restless and emotionally aware, moving from breakneck street-punk to moments of surprising melody and reflection. Backed by a reinvigorated rhythm section, the Utters still argue with the world and mean every word. – SONYA BENNETT-BRANDT

INFO: Sat, 8pm, Ivy Room, 860 San Pablo Ave., Albany. $29. 510.526.5888.

SATURDAY, JAN. 10

SYNTH-POP

LOS MICROWAVES BY MICROWAVE BUDDHA

A show stoked with Los Microwaves by Microwave Buddha, Winston Tong & Lx Rudis, Nasty World and Tropisphere is likely incendiary. The Los Microwaves light up audiences with synthesizer-driven pop, techno-punk mischief. Load on the sonic gymnastics of Baby Buddha—a new-wave duo with Charles Hornaday on vocals, guitar, electronics and drums; and David Javelosa on vocals, electronics and clarinet—and things at Thee Stork get downright fiery. Next comes Winston Tong, contributing a counterpoint cool, electropop element, piling on former Untis member Lx Rudi, Oakland’s Nasty World and Troposphere, and the sounds of the Bay Area. – LF

INFO: Sat, 8pm, Thee Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. $15-18. 510.859.8709.

SUNDAY, JAN. 11

ROCK

BI-2

Formed in 1988, the Belarusian alt-rock group Bi-2 was voted the Best Rock Act at the 2007 MTV Russian Music Awards. But it’s their story that’s truly captivating. Two of the founding members originally moved to Israel in the 1990s and then to Russia in an attempt to relaunch the band. Their opposition to the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine left Bi-2 blacklisted, and they immigrated to the U.S. The band got caught up in Thailand in 2023 on expired work visas, causing an international crisis as to where they should go, as several members had multiple citizenships. Thankfully, they were let go. They released a brand-new album this past October.MW

INFO: Sun, 8pm, UC Theatre, 2036 University Ave., Berkeley. $80-$125. 510.356.4000.

TUESDAY, JAN. 13

JAZZ

RANZEL MERRITT

Yoshi’s is playing host to the Bay Area New Jazz Era Series 1: “The Birth of a New Breed,” and on Jan. 13 presents Oakland-born saxophonist, composer and vocalist Ranzel Merritt, described as “where vintage jazz fusion meets modern swagger.” In any case, listening to him swing on the tenor sax reveals he’s the real deal, honoring some of the greats like Kenny Garrett, with whom he studied, while honing his own unique brilliance. He takes inspiration from his drummer father, he’s said, which shows that when jazz is in one’s blood it can’t be denied. – JH

INFO: Tue, 7:30pm, Yoshi’s, 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland. $25/adv, $30/door. 510.238.9200.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 14 *CANCELLED*

LATIN

NIDIA GÓNGORA

Nidia Góngora’s voice carries the tides of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. A Latin Grammy–nominated singer, composer and cultural researcher from Timbiquí, Góngora has spent more than two decades bringing the region’s marimba- and drum-rooted traditions into conversation with the wider world. Her recent project, Pacífica Maravilla, moves fluidly between ceremony and songcraft, building on collaborations with artists as varied as reggaetón artist Feid and poet Shirley Campbell Barr. This is music meant to be felt in the body—dance floor open. – SBB

INFO: Wed, 8pm, The Freight, 2020 Addison St., Berkeley. $39-$44. 510.644.2020.

Dry January is elevated locally with craft and care

People say less is more, implying abundance is overrated. But during Dry January 2026, less and more become best buddies. The 31-day trek has adults intentionally eliminating alcohol from their beverage list. The motivations to abstain are myriad, ranging from temporary deprivation as an experiment to longterm health goals and lifestyle choices. After years of suffering drinks with the taste and mouth-feel of discarded motor oil or overly sweetened fruit juices, today’s no-alcohol (NA) options are superior to the NA mocktail, beer or wine of the past.

In the East Bay nearly every bar, restaurant and lounge offers NA options. Skilled mixologists and bartenders pour years of research, hands-on trial-and-error knowledge and individual artistry into every glass. To gain special insight into the Dry January movement, we spoke to the owner/operators of two establishments located in Oakland: Chef Nelson German of Sobre Mesa, and Tallboy’s Den Stephens.

Created by Top Chef alum German, Sobre Mesa specializes in Afro-Latino cuisine inspired by his Dominican roots and West African ancestry. Drink flavors—cinnamon, pineapple and others—that represent the slave trade in those countries tell a story.

“Back in the days, an NA drink was just mixing juices,” German said. “Now, it’s taken seriously. It’s a true craft to build a mocktail with unique, fun flavors that trip your mind.”

For the Pineapple Nutmeg Express, Abstinence Spirits blend with Sobre Mesa’s in-house caramelized pineapple juice and a signature syrup created with cinnamon, sugar and West African spices. German suggests that a perfect “live life to its fullest” meal to accompany the drink might be Stuffed Ripe Plantain; the seasonal salad with Macintosh apples, pineapple, mango, pumpkin seeds and parmesan; and the Braised Pork Belly brined in pineapple juice and slow-roasted for five hours.

Tallboy’s Stephens said developing the Espresso Martini and Greensleeves NA drinks was fun. Using Namari as the base spirit provides the former with textures mirroring a classic espresso martini’s depth, grip and punch. “It finishes super long, with complexity,” he said.

Greensleeves offers two expressions—spice and garden—with a blend of Seedlip Spice, Seedlip Garden, snap pea, orgeat and lemon. Inspired by winter salads, the flavors are citrusy, nutty and tart. An upscale hot dog like the Lion Dancing Dog and the Dry Martini Salad—a salad inspired by a drink—bring bold culinary adventure to his recommended meal.

“More guests ask for NA beverages,” Stephens said. “The NA spirits are great, and more technique means silkier textures, less water-dilution, different and skilled infusions of flavors and modifiers to lift up specific characteristics, and great garnishes and pouring techniques that create something visually spectacular. NA beer has reached its peak, and wine increasingly offers more nuanced varietals.

“I think spirits still need to grow,” Stephens added. “The aperitifs are spot-on and NA bourbons or rums are getting there, but not perfected yet. Abstinence and Seedlip are getting close. The espresso martini has blown up in the last two years and people are asking for it. I love mine with spiced rum—it’s perfection. Coffee-based drinks and ones made with new juices and syrups are really growing and often requested.”

Stephens is grateful that after 20 years in the business, the standard expectation is that a bar will serve NA beverages. “It’s de rigueur and no longer something you can phone in,” he said. “There’s an entire group of our guests who were underserved. Now, the competition is not just with each other, but with ourselves. We also have customers with more discerning palates. They want to feel welcome and receive drinks made with the same amount of care and attention as alcoholic drinks.”

Asking themselves if an NA drink sings and fills a gap in the menu, Tallboy’s new offerings must stand on their own and be spectacular, according to Stephens, who believes spirits have developed the most and still have room for growth. The chemistry and science in barrel-aged NAs leave them lagging behind, but Stephens is optimistic, saying, “Remember, alcoholic spirits have a 100-year headstart on NA spirits.”

As the conversations wind up, the discussion circles around the possible contradiction between Dry January’s “get healthy, go NA” message and their establishments’ reliance on selling alcohol for a portion of their revenue.

“First and foremost, our space is a place to gather, to congregate,” Stephens said. “We lost so many large bars and gathering spaces in Oakland during the pandemic. They became insolvent. What people are drinking at Tallboy is a side point. What matters is do they feel warm, welcome, comfortable, safe? Do they enjoy the people they’re with or meet here?

“Alcohol has always been a social lubricant, but it’s not necessary,” he continued. “Dry January is proof positive of that. We don’t see a dip in sales. People still go out to engage with the community, family and friends.”

German said, “It’s a give-and-take. For bars and restaurants, we have to show variety. Young professionals are now beverage enthusiasts; they want to try something new. We have to have alcohol for someone who wants it. For others, we have NA—it’s a way for us to have fun, be more creative and health conscious.

“But classic drinks are never going away,” he added. “There’s actually a pushback called Ginuary. It’s a pun and a new movement, but Dry January is popular. We see people try it and continue doing it all year long.”

How We Pick the Best Online Casino in the Philippines for Your Gaming?

Choosing where to play should feel easy. We do the heavy lifting behind the scenes so you can focus on playing, winning and enjoying the ride. Every PH casino online we recommend earns that spot through detailed, hands-on review.

Licensing and Security Come First at an Online Casino in the Philippines

The first thing we check is licensing. A legit Filipino online casino should hold a proper license from Curaçao, Malta, or PAGCOR. If that’s missing, the review ends there. Then we look at protection: SSL encryption, secure servers, fraud prevention and payment processing standards.

We also verify whether third-party auditors test the Random Number Generators to ensure fair outcomes. When Provably Fair technology is available, it adds an extra layer of transparency that helps confirm a legit online casino philippines players can trust.

Bonuses Only Count When They Pay Off

In the world of online casinos in the Philippines, a headline offer means nothing if the terms don’t deliver. We break down every bonus from the inside out to see if it’s worth your time at an online casino in the Philippines:

  • We check the wagering requirements to make sure they’re realistic, not just flashy
  • We look at expiration dates and how long you have to complete the terms
  • We confirm game contribution rates, so you know which games actually count toward the bonus
  • We check for maximum cash-out limits, which tell you how much of your winnings you’re allowed to keep
  • We look beyond the welcome bonus and review long-term offers like cashback, reloads and full VIP programs

A Real Casino Needs a Real Game Library

A strong game library is one of the first signs you’re dealing with a proper Filipino online casino. The best online casinos offer variety, speed and quality that covers every type of player.

  • Thousands of online casino games including slots, table games, crash games and specialty picks
  • Megaways slots, Bonus Buy titles, progressive jackpots and themed video slots
  • Full collection of card and roulette tables: blackjack, baccarat, poker and more
  • Clean, stable experience across devices with fast loading and easy filters
  • Fully developed live casino Philippines section with professional dealers and real-time streaming
  • Games provided by trusted developers with a record of fair results and strong design

Mobile Play Should Feel Effortless

A top online casino PH can’t afford a clunky mobile site. Whether it’s a dedicated Philippines online casino app or a well-optimized browser version, we test it on Android and iOS. That means checking how fast the games load, how clean the layout feels and how easily you can deposit, withdraw, or reach support on your phone.

If a platform stutters or hides key features behind menus, we move on.

Payment Systems Must Be Fast, Clear and Flexible

You need payment options that match how you already handle money. We look for fast Gcash integration, low fees, instant crypto processing and bank methods that don’t make you wait.  A PH casino online that delays your payout or hides fees in the fine print doesn’t make the cut. The most trusted online casinos show you everything upfront and move your funds without drama.

Support Can’t Be a Black Hole

Responsive and knowledgeable customer support is a clear indicator of a casino’s reliability. Our experts test the accessibility of support channels, typically 24/7 live chat, email and sometimes phone support, and critically evaluate the speed and helpfulness of their responses. Sneak peek: A preview of films to look forward to in 2026

0

I keep waiting to become more cynical about movies as a film critic. Every week I read one think piece after the next about how cinema is dying and no good movies are made anymore. But 2025 was packed to the rafters with one masterpiece after another.

In a year with movies like Train Dreams, One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Black Bag, Sinners, Weapons, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, No Other Choice and so many other stone classics, it’s hard to feel like filmmakers, actors and writers aren’t still out there telling stories of lasting power and quality.

I’m not saying 2026 is going to remotely match the quality of 2025, but I’m still excited for quite a few films—some of which have a good chance of being all-timers. Here’s a brief look at just a few of the films coming this year that have my attention. Several of these might see their release dates change and new ones will also get added, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Jan. 16, “Dead Man’s Wire”: The film, about a true-life hostage situation in 1977, looks like a powerful crime drama about class and outlaw justice, but the reason I’m hyped is that it’s the latest film from indie godfather Gus Van Sant. He’s made a few less-than-stellar movies over the last few years, but has a lifetime pass from me for Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho and To Die For.

Jan. 30, “Send Help”: A bonkers island survival thriller starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, directed by Sam Raimi—who’s back in horror mode for the first time since 2009’s all-timer Drag Me to Hell—and with a new score from Danny Elfman. Shut up and take my money.

Feb. 6, “Pillion”: A BDSM love story starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry (Dudley Dursley) Melling. Every sub deserves a good dom, and this looks absolutely adorable.

Feb. 13, “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die”: A sci-fi comedy thriller starring Sam Rockwell that looks like equal parts 12 Monkeys and Everything Everywhere All At Once. From director Gore Verbinski, who hasn’t made a film since 2016’s A Cure for Wellness. This looks like a return to form for the imaginative and singular filmmaker.

Feb. 27, “In the Blink of an Eye”: I don’t have much information about this one except that it stars Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones and Daveed Diggs. It’s set across thousands of years, spans the entire history of the world and is directed by Andrew Stanton, the brain behind the Toy Story movies and WALL-E. Can’t wait to have my brain broken.

March 6, “The Bride!”: Featuring one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen, this reimagining of The Bride of Frankenstein looks like another powerhouse performance from Jessie Buckley and a work of striking vision from director Maggie Gyllenhaal.

March 20, “Project Hail Mary”: I’ve been in the mood lately for a crowd-pleasing sci-fi dramedy along the lines of The Martian, and this looks like it fits the bill perfectly. Everyone I know who read the book loved it and I’m a big fan of the Baby Goose, so I feel extremely overhyped for this one.

March 27, “Alpha”: A new film from French auteur Julia Ducournau (Raw and Titane) is cause for celebration, but this looks like a brutal time at the movies. Receiving terrible reviews at last year’s Cannes, this allegory about the AIDS crisis might be a misunderstood classic or the first bad movie of Ducournau’s career. I’ll be there opening day, either way.

April 24, “Mother Mary”: David Lowery is one of my favorite living directors. I have a tattoo of his masterpiece A Ghost Story, and his The Green Knight is a misunderstood banger, so his new film Mother Mary is high on my list of anticipated titles. Starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel as a pop star and her estranged costume designer, this looks like a hallucinatory rollercoaster.

May 22, “I Love Boosters”: The new film from Boots Riley, the provocateur behind The Coup and Sorry to Bother You. All I know about his next trip is that its cast features Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield and Taylor Paige, and follows a group of shoplifters going after a fashion icon. Riley is a genius, so this should be insane.

June 12, “Disclosure Day”: Steven Spielberg doing another alien invasion thriller has me feeling like I’m 12 all over again. With Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt in front of the camera, I want this to be Spielberg’s best since Minority Report. Better, even!

July 17, “The Odyssey”: The five-minute preview that played before Avatar was breathtaking —even Christopher Nolan’s worst movie is still better than most people’s best. The man is a visionary with a limitless imagination and I think The Odyssey will be something really special.

Aug. 14, “Flowervale Street”: This new film is from David Robert Mitchell, the weirdo behind one of my favorite movies of the last decade—which most everyone else despises—Under the Silver Lake. Starring Anna Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, this appears to be a sci-fi freakout about a family in the ’80s who starts noticing strange things happening on their street. I’m excited to see a trailer for this one.

Sept. 11, “Clayface”: A body horror comic book movie written by Mike Flanagan and set in James Gunn’s new DC Comics Universe sounds like a step in a new direction for superhero films. I’m ready for this genre to expand and this looks like the beginning of something original and, hopefully, groundbreaking.

Oct. 9, “The Social Reckoning”: The sequel to The Social Network sees Jeremy Strong playing Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White in the lead with another script by the great Aaron Sorkin. I’ll miss David Fincher in the director’s chair, but he’s busy making a sequel to Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood.

Nov. 26, “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew”: Greta Gerwig making a Narnia movie sounds like a treat, but as someone not very in love with the previous films, here’s hoping her unique sensibility will do something remarkable with these stories.

Dec. 18, “Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three”: Colloquially known as “Dunesday,” this double bill will most likely be 2026’s version of “Barbenheimer,” unless one of the movies moves from this date. Marvel wants this to be a return to form by bringing back Steve Rogers and the directors of Endgame, while Denis Villeneuve is wrapping up his Spice-y Sand Jesus Trilogy as only he can.

A culinary year in review, part deux

To close out the 2025 restaurant roundup, here are the final five.

5: Mon Superette

Sometimes when I recommend a restaurant to someone I know, they may report back to me with a different or less enthusiastic response. I was relieved to hear that a friend of mine who lives near Mon Superette on Piedmont Avenue also loved it and continued to pick up to-go food there throughout the year. Mon Superette is a small takeaway storefront from the three owners of Bacogai, Alameda’s best hot-pot spot. One of the chef/owners, Khanh Tran, is taking the lead. She cooks a few things at the back of the store, like fried bananas, but most of the to-go items, such as summer rolls, milk teas and noodle dishes, stock the refrigerated shelves up front. It’s really an ideal place to pick up lunch or find a response to the eternally recurring question, “What’s for dinner?”

4: Tarts de Feybesse
At the end of the pandemic I discovered Tarts de Feybesse made deliveries. Talk about a dream come true. Paul Feybesse not only co-baked with his wife Monique, but also delivered boxes of éclairs himself. I found out about their Vallejo bakery—operated at the time out of a commercial kitchen—after watching a season of Top Chef with Monique as a competitor. I spoke with the reality show alum in 2022 about the couple’s plans to open a brick-and-mortar bakery. They subsequently found a place in downtown Oakland and officially opened at the end of 2024. After the Feybesses were nominated for a James Beard Award earlier this year, they continued to receive heaps of praise for their trompe l’oeil entremets and viennoiseries.

3: Donato & Co.
At the beginning of December, I wrote an EBX dining newsletter entry about the fab lunch I had at Donato & Co. But it makes this list for another reason. It reminded me of Rick & Ann’s, but not because the food was similar. When Rick & Ann’s closed this year—though the couple continues to run their catering business—so did a couple of decades’ worth of memories, many of them romantic, but plenty of them about outings there with friends and family. I haven’t consciously looked for a replacement, but I believe I’ve found it at Donato.

2: Dao Artisan Noodle

After an entire year of eating out, Dao’s sautéed pea shoots with garlic stood out as one of 2025’s best dishes. When a restaurant makes that much effort to care about making a leaf taste good, it bodes well for everything else. In fact, Dao made the best bowl of dan dan noodles I’ve ever had. The ingredients—fresh herbs, vegetables and pork—made the difference. When I paid a visit, the kitchen could do no wrong. It left me with a longing and an appetite to explore a lot more of Dao’s artisan menu.

Numero Uno: Oken

A scrumptious, well-made sandwich from Ok’s Deli did not suggest that Albert Ok’s next project, Oken, would contain an infinite variety of culinary delights. A baechu, or Napa cabbage, salad looked like a plated work of art, whorled with burdock root, onions, garlic and potatoes. Arranged in a compact circle, an elegant tomato salad came adorned with crispy wonton slivers. Tangy slices of grilled zucchini, fresh cucumber and sprigs of green onion complemented our shared seared piece of trout. But the pièce de résistance for me was a bowl of tsukune dumpling noodle soup. It was made with chicken meatball dumplings, a massive amount of green onions, one soft-boiled egg and housemade egg noodles. Recognizable as a bowl of ramen, this dish was also a reinvention of one. Every dish at Oken looked like something new, something I’d never tried before, but each one also tasted familiar and comforting. I just liked everything about the place.

Free Will Astrology: Week of Jan. 7

0

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The mystics drone on endlessly about letting go. But I’m here now to praise the art of holding on fiercely, tenderly, with full commitment. Some treasures deserve your passionate grip. Some people warrant your loyal devotion. Especially in the coming months, dear Aries, I invite you to devote yourself to your exciting dreams with ardent intensity. No surrender! Relentless perseverance! Uncompromising faith in the beauty and truth you love! What looks like stubbornness to outsiders will actually be fidelity to a vision others can’t yet see.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): As far back as the 19th century, daredevil college students in the U.K. have reveled in the practice of “night climbing.” They clamber up chapels, spires, towers and bridges under cover of darkness. Why? Mainly for adventure, mischief and altered perspectives. In the coming months, Taurus, you may be ready for your own symbolic version of night climbing. If that sounds fun, seek out vantage points you’ve never accessed. Experiment with possibilities you’ve dismissed as off-limits or outside your range. Be safe, of course, but also be joyfully exploratory. I bet the view from the frontiers will change you in inspiring ways.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In the coming months, I’m confident you will see and understand subtleties that most people miss. You’ll be a maestro at tuning in to nuanced subtexts in conversations and hidden openings in stale situations. Everyone else may assume that familiar situations will never change, but you will have the power to tease out creative possibilities. You might even decode seemingly contradictory truths with such aplomb that you surprise yourself. Use this superpower with as much kindness as you can, Gemini. Some discoveries may tempt you toward clever mischief, but I hope that instead you will choose inspired guidance. Your expanded spectrum, if spiced with compassion, can consistently reveal your next leap.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): The honeyguide bird of Africa has a lucrative arrangement with humans. It calls out to honey-hunters, leading them through brush to wild beehives built into trees. The people harvest the honey, and the bird eats the leftover wax and larvae. This cooperation is passed down over generations and benefits both species. Let’s use this as a metaphor for your future in 2026. You will have extra power to notice where mutual benefit is possible, even with unexpected allies. They may be able to guide you toward resources you couldn’t find alone, and you will have value to give in return. Keep an ear out for signals that say, “Come with me, and we’ll both gain.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris took years to build. Work began in 1163 and continued till 1345. Generations of architects, masons and artisans contributed to the project, and those who began it didn’t live to see it completed. Yet they labored with devotion, trusting that the holy beauty they facilitated would endure beyond their lifetimes. I hope you’re inspired by this story, Leo. It’s an apt metaphor for you. In the coming months, you could and should lay stones for creations you may not see fully accomplished for months or even years. I encourage you to redefine and refine what faith means to you, and summon it in abundance.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Ready to decommission your inner censor? Interested in dropping the mask, relaxing your guard and rewilding your gorgeous but slightly inhibited self? That’s what I recommend. Here are ways to fully enjoy the liberating grace period of the coming months: 1. Don’t deny yourself pleasures that would be healthy to indulge. 2. Shed taboos that were smart safeguards once upon a time but are no longer. 3. Re-evaluate why you treat certain fun activities as questionable. 4. Be brightly compassionate toward aspects of yourself you regard as wounded or inferior. 5. Be receptive to rebellious urges.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In 1839, French artist Louis Daguerre perfected the daguerreotype, an early type of photography. The images were so detailed that you could count the threads in a subject’s clothing. The only downside: They required minutes of perfect stillness to capture. A slight twitch or squirm could blur the picture. People held their breath and resisted the urge to fidget, hoping to preserve the magic moment. In this spirit, Libra, let’s make the long exposure your power metaphor during the coming months. The most useful truths will reveal themselves best if you give them time to develop. In conversations, resist filling every silence. In projects, don’t rush the pace. Have patient fun lingering on the threshold as the mysteries coalesce and clarify.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 1907, Scorpio artist Pablo Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. It was a work so radically different from his earlier art and from the era’s norms that even his friends were stunned. Some called it ugly; others, incomprehensible. Yet the painting became a foundation of Cubism and reshaped modern art. Dear Scorpio, I suspect you may be on the verge of your own Les Demoiselles phase in 2026: unveiling novel approaches and innovative changes so original that they rattle comfortable assumptions. Don’t be discouraged if the initial responses don’t bring you appreciation. The root-shaking breakthroughs you’re consorting with may take others a while to recognize and welcome.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You Sagittarians are often drawn to teaching. You have a predilection and a passion for sharing what you have learned from your adventures and explorations. Many of you also possess a related gift: helping people make the journey to where enlightening lessons can best occur. You have a knack for opening their minds and clearing the way so they can awaken to new ways of seeing and imagining the world. I hope you will provide both of these blessings in abundance during the coming months. Your ability to inspire and educate will be at a peak.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The coming months are ripe for sacred audacity: boldness with a conscience and courage guided by kindness. Imagine you’re a Benevolent Initiator, whose superpower is to kindle beginnings without causing disruption and unease. Practice brilliant, incremental nudges and tweaks rather than grand interventions. If you’re hesitating to say what needs to be said, deliver a modest version now and a stronger one later. Make gradual momentum your ally. Homework: Identify a future scene you want to generate and take three elegantly simple steps toward it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Safety isn’t the opposite of adventure. It’s the infrastructure that lets adventure be expansive. Keep that in mind in the coming months, Aquarius. You will be wise to cultivate cozy bravery. You should relax deeply and nurture your strength. Build the support system for your future boldness. Then, in the second half of 2026, you will be well-prepared to launch a phase of experimental fun and exploratory learning. For best results, surround yourself with love and care. Decide who best supports you and make it attractive for them to support you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): High in the Andes Mountains, farmers have for centuries made chuño, a freeze-dried potato that can last for years. They leave the potatoes outside overnight to let the freezing temperatures draw out the water. In the daytime, the strong sunlight and dry mountain air evaporate residual moisture. By this process, a perishable food becomes a long-lasting staple. I propose we make the chuño your symbol of power, Pisces. The coming months will be an ideal time to build reserves. I hope you will turn what you have grown and developed into resources that will nourish you well into the future.

Homework: I dare you to give yourself a pep talk about a daring possibility. Newsletter.FreeWillAstroloy.com

Revolution and retrenchment revealed in ‘Forging Latino Power’

0

The U.S. Senate now includes six Latine members: Democrats Alex Padilla of California, Catherine Cortez-Masto of Nevada, Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Ruben Gallego of Arizona; and Republicans Ted Cruz of Texas and Bernie Moreno of Ohio.

But as David R. Ayón and George L. Pla detail in their exhaustively researched book, Forging Latino Power: The Politics of Inclusion, Backlash, and Resistance, released Dec. 2, the road to that milestone was both complex and continuously evolving.

The book’s forward, by California’s other senator, Adam Schiff, makes that clear, saying: “If there is any image that captures the enormous progress of Latino empowerment in the last century, and the fierce backlash it has prompted, it is this: a Latino US senator from the largest state in the union on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back,” referring to the infamous June 12, 2025, incident in which Padilla was forcibly removed from a press conference held by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem after attempting to ask a question.

Barrios and colonias

Forging Latino Power follows Ayón and Pla’s Power Shift: How Latinos in California Transformed Politics in America, and much of the book continues exploring the importance of California in the evolution of Latine politics. “Latinos are the largest racial or ethnic group in California, with over 16 million people calling the state home,” the book points out.

In a phone interview, Ayón noted that early Mexican immigration to the state, and other parts of the West in the 1800s, was about labor, including the migrant worker bracero program, which ended in 1964. It also included mining. A little-known fact is that the “Mercury” in the name of the San Jose Mercury News refers to a major mercury mine on the “New Almaden” property.

But in the 20th century, as immigrants moved to urban areas, the barrios, especially the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East L.A., began to foment political organization. The former Jewish enclave already had a culture of activism. “Boyle Heights was the mold for the progressive Latino tradition,” Ayón said.

Yet at the same time, in other, rural parts of the state, farmworkers formed colonias, their own small communities that preserved traditions and values brought from conservative rural Mexico. Based on their experiences, these people were distrustful of politics, Ayón said, while at the same time, “Establishing a colonia is an act of resistance.”

This dichotomy is discussed extensively in the book and prefigured by this quote from the preface: “Progressive Latino politics generally can be seen as transitioning to a post-barrio era, one that more reflects suburban, small-town, and rural Latino interests, values, and perspectives, and is challenged by an increasingly divided electorate.”

DEEP DIVE David R. Ayón, pictured, and George L. Pla released their exhaustively researched book, ‘Forging Latino Power: The Politics of Inclusion, Backlash, and Resistance,’ in December. (Photos courtesy of Berkeley Public Policy Press)

The power of narrative

A substantial part of Forging Latino Power is devoted to detailed narratives about pivotal Latine political figures. Even those familiar with the contributions of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez will discover many unexplored nuances, particularly their participation in and eventual separation from the Community Service Organization.

In Part II, “Going National,” Ayón and Pla write, “Latinos as a group did not so much opt to be involved in national policy as they had national policy thrust on them, forcing a choice between silence, accommodation, or resistance.”

This section calls attention to the growing number of Latines in Washington during the Carter administration, including Lou Moret, Leo Estrada, Gloria Molina, Art Torres and Leonel Castillo. It also extensively documents that administration’s attempts to deal with immigration, and the rise of “casas,” service centers for resident undocumented immigrant workers.

“The Casas attracted young, idealistic Chicano-movement volunteers,” Ayón and Pla note. These included Oakland’s Maria Elena Durazo; future Los Angeles mayor and current candidate for governor of California, Antonio Villaraigosa; and future state assembly member, state senator and L.A. city council member, Gil Cedillo.

Also called out in this section is the growing profile of Latine media: L.A.’s La Opinión and KMEX, along with Univision.

Part III, “After IRCA: New Advances, Backlash, Resistance and Breakthroughs,” discusses the impact of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which legalized some undocumented workers and attempted to penalize employers for hiring unauthorized workers, as well as 1982’s changes to the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. census. Major milestones reached in the 1980s faced backlash, with California approving “English as the official language” initiatives.

But 1993, Ayón and Pla write, was the dawn of a new political era, with leaders such as Kevin de León and Fabian Núñez emerging in Southern California. Then came “the Battle of 187,” fighting the anti-immigrant ballot proposition. Opposition to it catalyzed other leaders—including future senator, Alex Padilla. The proposition passed, but was declared unconstitutional and never allowed to take effect.

The Trump Era

Part IV of the book, “Always Another Battle,” covers the waves of advancement and backlash during the Obama, Biden and Trump administrations.

In the phone interview, Ayón emphasized that the shocking shift in Latine voters to Trump in 2024 was fueled by several factors: “Eight years of Trump MAGA propaganda,” he said, “and rising political cynicism also benefited Trump.” Polls show, he said, that Latine confidence in government, once as high as 60%, has fallen to about half that.

And there has been what Ayón views as a permanent shift in California to Democratic leaders such as Speaker of the House Robert Rivas, Senate President Pro Tempore Monique Limón and Congressman Pete Aguilar, who represent less-urban, less-progressive areas of the state.

But “Trump has squandered his equity with Latino voters,” he said. The book states, “The second Trump presidency, with its shockingly aggressive approach to US allies and neighbors in the world, also has the potential of provoking a new front of Latino, and specifically Mexican-American, resistance paired with pressure for inclusion.” The upcoming 2026 midterms, he said, will be a test of this.

For those committed to understanding the history of Latine politics, its shifts and its complexities, as well as its potential to shape the country’s future, Forging Latino Power is an ideal resource.

East Bay sounds showcase eclectic artistry

0

While it seems like ancient history, it is within living memory that releasing an album was an entirely reasonable economic decision for independent musicians. Back when people were accustomed to exchanging currency for physical objects embedded with sonic information, musicians could expect to cover their costs of an album’s production.

These days, it’s never been easier to record and release music. The process of writing, arranging, recording, mastering, sequencing and packaging a series of tracks that ideally add up to more than the sum of their parts can still play an essential role in a musician’s creative process. But producing an album is harder than ever to justify financially.

Yet hundreds of East Bay artists still seek to define and share their music by releasing CDs and even LPs, which invariably provide better sound and a more engaging experience than music disseminated solely online. Here are nine of my favorite albums released by local artists this year, in alphabetical order. Paying for the albums increases the likelihood these artists will be able to continue recording their music.

Actual Trio, “Spires”

Forged during a years-long regular gig at North Oakland’s long-defunct Actual Café, Berkeley’s Actual Trio features insistently exploratory guitarist John Schott and the supplely swinging team of bassist Dan Seamans and drummer John Hanes. The group’s third album, Spires, centers on a concise, three-part suite inspired by Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers, which neatly matches the trio’s spikey but discreet sound with the soaring, latticed South Central Los Angeles landmark.

Citta Di Vitti, “citta di vitti”

Though saxophonist Phillip Greenlief relocated from his longtime digs in Oakland to Maine last year, the collective trio Citta Di Vitti features the prolific Berkeley rhythm section tandem of bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Jason Levis. Inspired by the portentously spacious films of Michelangelo Antonioni, the eponymous project moves curiously through those cinematic vistas with a variety of undulating, rhythmically taut interactions.

Daggerboard & Erik Jekabson Orchestra, “The Axes Volume II: Summer Solstice”

Part of an ambitious, ongoing project featuring trumpeter Erik Jekabson’s orchestral works inspired by seasonal shifts, The Axes Volume II was recorded live at the Hillside Club in Berkeley and the Dresher Studio in West Oakland.

Stocked with an embarrassment of talent, the ensemble navigates Jekabson’s lustrous melding of jazz voicings, minimalism and chamber music with glorious results. Working closely with Gregory Howe, a writing and arranging partnership that records as Daggerboard, he’s created a sumptuous lyrical realm unlike any other on the scene.

B. DeVeaux, “Chrysalis”

It’s been a breakout year for Oakland soul singer/songwriter B. DeVeaux, whose luscious contralto and gift for crafting incantatory tunes have led to performances on illustrious stages. From the opening chords of “Because You”—cleverly repurposed from Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”—Chrysalis delivers a program of songs enhanced by the stripped-down production, with DeVeaux emerging as a fully formed musical force.

The Doodle Cats, “Reinventing the Wheel”

While I’d never heard of the Doodle Cats before receiving a link to the sextet’s second album, Reinventing the Wheel, a quick glimpse at the personnel led me to take a listen—and the experience was deliriously pleasurable.

Interpreting tunes by bassist and bandleader Mighty Joe Belson, the Cats swing with elegance and conviction, delivering tunes that sound like lost tracks from a Thad Jones session circa 1955. The cast includes some of the region’s most dependably eloquent improvisers, including El Cerrito trumpeter Erik Jekabson, Emeryville pianist Kevin Wong and El Sobrante drummer Julian Hogan.

Green Mitchell Trio, “Nature Channel”

One of 12 albums released as part of Lisa Mezzacappa’s 12/12 series on her Queen Bee Records label, Nature Channel features her on bass with frequent musical partner Jason Levis in a program of original tunes by Cory Wright on tenor sax and bass clarinet.

The Oakland-based Wright, an invaluable figure on the Bay Area improvised music scene, is heard much more frequently elevating ensembles led by his peers. His own music is always intriguing, unfurling with deliberation and muscular grace. Just when it seems he’s channeling his Apollonian inclinations through his tenor and his Dionysian impulses via his bass clarinet, he switches it up, leaving one guessing about his next move.

Myra Melford, “Splash”

Berkeley pianist/composer Myra Melford has a long track record of assembling volatile bands, and the trio Splash is a singular addition to her treasure-laden discography. Featuring powerhouse bassist Michael Formanek and the protean percussionist Ches Smith on vibraphone and drums, Splash is distinguished by a bright but earthy sound, full of dense harmonies and lapidary textures. It’s her latest project inspired by the cryptic canvases of Cy Twombly, and the music often evokes the rhythmic intensity and foreboding silences of his painting.

John Santos Sextet & Friends, “Horizontes”

Oakland percussion maestro John Santos leads one of the best Latin-jazz bands in the country, and his compatriots John Calloway (flute), Marco Diaz (piano and trumpet), Saul Sierra (bass), Charlie Gurke (saxophones) and David Flores (drums) get plenty of room to express themselves on Horizontes.

But this passionate program is designed to showcase the band’s expansive web of musical relationships, which encompasses Puerto Rico, Cuba, New York and beyond. With guests such as clarion vocalist Jerry Medina, drum great Eric Harland and flutist Elena Pinderhughes, each track can serve as dance floor fodder, but invites closer scrutiny.

Ben Davis and Chris Brown, “Jongleurs”

Berkeley cellist Ben Davis, a jazz-steeped improviser, and Oakland pianist and electronics explorer Chris Brown, who spent three decades as co-director of the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College, convene for a series of mercurial dialogues.More interested in granular textural details than thematic development, the Jongleurs conversations can sound aggressive, melancholy, playful and heady, while always feeling open to a sudden shift in perspective. Obscuring distinctions between composition and improvisation, the pieces develop with their own internal logic and dramaturgy.

JAZZ

GUILHEM FOURTY QUARTET

Toulouse-born, New York–based drummer and composer Guilhem Fourty leads his quartet with a rare balance of control and curiosity. His work moves comfortably between intimate club rooms and major international jazz festivals, a range that reflects both ambition and craft. Joined by Skylar Tang on trumpet, Hannah Mayer on piano and Aidan McCarthy on bass, the Guilhem Fourty Quartet plays modern jazz that’s attentive and elastic. SONYA BENNETT-BRANDT

The Chicago jazz scene has long nurtured creative Afrocentric experimentation, and the duo of Angel Bat Dawid and 9MAGICFOREVER1 embodies that sonically expansive lineage. Co-presented with Folk Yeah, the 9th Gate Sonic Research Society (N.G.S.R.S.) brings together Dawid on clarinet, piano, electronics and vocals, and 9MAGICFOREVER1 contributing on electronics, guitar, saxophone, flute, bass, piano and drums. Laced with improvisation, their Afrofuturist soundscapes flow from out of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s “ancient to the future” ethos, layering beats and harmonies that reference familiar idioms refracted through their idiosyncratic visions. THEATER

‘DOG MAN: THE MUSICAL’

There is something surreal in the fact that, entering 2026, this musical based on the bestselling comic books of Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants, will seem entirely realistic. A crime-fighting policeman with a transplanted dog’s head? Sure! A cyborg fish named Flippy commanding an army of Beasty Buildings to take over a city? Yes! How about evil Petey-clone cats bent on revenge and the loss of lunch, a major drama? Absolutely believable. Unlike real-life’s host of crazy characters and breaking news, this 2019 superhero comedy musical is pumped full of terrific tunes, positive energy and hilarious, heartwarming fun for everyone from age 5 to 105. Show on Sunday as well. – LF

The multigenerational lineup includes vibraphonist Gus Hurteau, pianist Ruben Green, alto saxophonist Max Nguyen and trumpeter Max Ehrhardt. CLASSICAL

HAPPY DOG DUO

Eric Tran and Nathan Cheung, the Happy Dog Duo, don’t believe classical piano has to be all tuxedos and intense expressions. For 20 years, they’ve focused on “bringing humor and joy” to performances of four-hands classics, original music and transcriptions. The Stanford grads obviously love playing together, and their happy vibe—as well as their artistry—draws in their audiences. Fun fact: The HDD are among the very few who have performed on the only Pleyel Double Grand Piano in the Western Hemisphere. Cool. JANIS HASHE

The screening will be preceded by a reception and followed by a conversation with director Shabnam Piryaei and the filmmakers, plus live music from Larry & Joe. Presented with East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, the evening is both a film event and a benefit supporting EBSC’s legal, educational and direct-aid work with Bay Area immigrants. – SBB
