Nupur Modi of Oakland was one of six activists detained yesterday in China after rappelling from the top of the Great Wall of China with a banner reading “One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008,” according to a press release from Students for a Free Tibet. The action came on the eve of the one-year countdown to the 2008 Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing. The statement says Tibetan activist groups believe China is using the Games as a way to legitimize its occupation of Tibet. Modi and the other activists were removed two hours into their stunt and their current whereabouts are “unknown.”
