At ten this morning, anti-rape activists will protest the Oakland Police Department’s failure to solve 1,800 sexual assault cases by dumping 1,800 shoes on City Hall. No, we’re not kidding. Oakland cops have acknowledged that transfers and manpower shortages have left the department’s Special Victims Unit unable to cope with the caseload, and almost 1,800 rape cases have gone unsolved over the last five years. Activists from Bay Area Women Against Rape will speak outside City Hall, as will prosecutors and elected officals, according to the Oakland Tribune. In addition to shoes, activists will also place purses and gardening gloves as a silent testament to rape survivors.
