Prosecutors have filed murder charges against the man who led Oakland police on a high-speed chase that killed an innocent bystander. But it’s time that the state legislature enacts mandatory tough sentencing laws for all such drivers, whether they actually kill someone or not. Maybe if suspects know they will be put behind bars for a long time, they will be less likely to try to speed away from police.
