It’s been almost two weeks. Ready for baseball to start up again? Thought so. The A’s are interviewing candidates for the club’s managerial position this week and next, and there are a few high-class entries in the field. One-time Giants pitcher Bud Black was most recently pitching coach for the Angels, whom he helped guide to a 2002 World Championship. Former catcher Jamie Quirk actually played for the Athletics from 1989 through 1992. Orel Hershiser was a legitimate superstar pitcher, even though it was mostly for the reviled Dodgers. But most true-green A’s fans favor current infield coach Ron Washington. As every Moneyball reader knows, Wash was the coach who turned catcher Scott Hatteberg into a “pickin’ machine” first baseman. He’s a consummate baseball skills teacher, probably the players’ choice. Also, as manager he would provide the A’s with the all-important New Orleans mojo. Let’s go Wash!
