Dellums’ 12-Day Shutdown Gets Flack From Council

At least four Oakland city councilmembers are opposed to or ambivalent about Mayor Ron Dellums‘ plan to shut down city government for twelve days. Dellums and the council need to shave at least $15 million from the budget in order to stay in the black, and the shutdown plan will contribute a little over $4 million to that effort. But councilmembers Desley Brooks and Larry Reid voiced opposition to the plan at a Wednesday budget workshop, and Jean Quan and Jane Brunner declared that they want the shutdown whittled down by a few days. According to the Oakland Tribune, Dellums insisted that with three separate unions to negotiate with, cutting employees cost-of-living adjustments was just too complicated, and this was the only option the city had absolute control over.
