Chevron Corporation is hyping videos made by an ex-felon in its effort to skirt responsibility in the destruction of a part of the Amazon rain forest. The ex-felon is Wayne Douglas Hansen, who pleaded guilty in 1987 for his role in a conspiracy to import 275,000 pounds of marijuana into the United States, according to the Associated Press. Hansen made secret videos of an Ecuadoran judge that was presiding over a $27 billion lawsuit against Chevron and whom the oil company alleges was involved in a bribery scheme. But the lawyers suing Chevron in Ecuadoran court say that Hansen’s close involvement in the case discredits the oil company’s allegations. The judge has maintained that Hansen’s videos were “edited and manipulated.”
