Whether it’s a pop-culture-laced new comedy or an action-packed take on Shakespearean tragedy, an Impact Theatre show might be polished or it might be pretty rough, but it’s almost always fun, fast-paced, and managing to keep the “s” in “scrappy.” Conveniently located right next to the Cal campus in the pizza-parlor basement of La Val’s Subterranean, Impact is now in its 12th season of providing “theater that doesn’t suck” to its mostly under-35 audience, including action serials, a lesbian Othello, plays called TV Sucks My Ass, and Fluffy Bunnies in a Field of Daisies, and others about superheroes, beauty queens, homicidal cartoons, and antichrist boyfriends. It’s a great place for the theater patrons of tomorrow to get acquainted with the next wave of actors, an introduction eased by the ample availability of beer.
