There’s a lot you can do over beers, but most people’s lists probably don’t include discussing topics like building stuff out of DNA, color theory, the neuroscience of sleep, a feminist critique of 1950s pin-up girls, and the oft-overlooked War of 1812. But with the tongue-in-cheek slogan “Be there and be square,” Nerd Nite East Bay promises to give you just that. The event started in various poorly lit watering holes in Boston before catching on like wildfire in more than fifty cities nationwide, most of which house large academic institutions brimming with beer-friendly scholars with astonishingly obscure areas of expertise. The Oakland-based iteration of the monthly series kicked off last October, making the Bay Area the only place in Nerd Nite history to house two separate Nerd Nites in a single metropolitan area — a true testament to our collective nerdiness (and love of beer). Shows are eight bucks at The New Parkway and include three short lectures, all guaranteed to blow your tipsy plebeian mind.
