Oakland’s Harborside Health Center might have more selection, but Berkeley Patients Group takes home the prize for Best Dispensary Lounge in the East Bay. The eleven-year-old club with fewer than 10,000 patients recently renovated its facilities to increase patient satisfaction, adding copious parking for bikes as well as cars. Much of its intimidating razor-wire fencing has been removed and replaced with less ominous black gating, and well-tended succulents stud the entrance — part of a master beautification plan that’s still underway. Inside, Berkeley Patients Group is actually a converted 1970s car dealership, with wood flooring and a groovy, vaulted glass showroom that looks out across the bustling intersection. Partitions separate check-in from the lounge where groups of aging hippies and young adults light up, chit chat, and hang out in the afternoon sun. Powerful fans suck up smoke, preventing the place from getting too funky. In the back, the club carries everything from award-winning, top-shelf Jack Frost to discount bags for patients on a tight budget.
