Berkeley Police Chief Douglas Hambelton is retiring, which means Berkeley now joins the cities of San Francisco and Oakland in searching for new permanent chiefs, according to the Trib. That’s not good news for Oakland, which is easily the most troubled of the three departments. Oakland will now have to compete for top talent with two other large police agencies in its own backyard. The loss of Hambleton is also tough on Berkeley. Under his command, the total number of serious felonies citywide dropped significantly.
