Ask the Gong family of East Oakland, near Highland Hospital, whose burgeoning real estate empire of five houses and a convenience store began slipping away after the rainy winter of 2002 caused the hill above – and three of the houses perched on it — to slide down into the Gongs’ properties. Now the question is: Who’s going to pay? Five years later, there may be a settlement. But don’t hold your breath. Staff writer Kara Platoni grabs a shovel and digs for the story.
