UC Berkeley May Soon Be Unaffordable

The University of California is planning to raise student fees nearly 10 percent for the summer session. University officials have not made an announcement about fee increases for the fall, but they appear likely, according to today’s Chron. The university has repeatedly raised fees over the past two decades to the point that a college education at one of California’s premier public universities is on the verge of being no longer affordable. UC Berkeley officials said they need the latest round of fee increases to offset an estimated $60 million to $70 million shortfall next school year. About half of the deficit is caused by the state financial crisis.
