.The Expensive Plastics Mess

A respected environmental organization says the shores of San Francisco Bay are strewn with nearly 1 million plastic bags, despite the efforts of area cities to lessen their use, the Chron reports. In addition, the San Jose Mercury News reported recently on an expedition to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge stew of swirling plastic in the ocean north of Hawaii. The reports make it clear that more cities and counties throughout California need to stand up and fight the plastic and petroleum industries and ban plastic bags. But it will be expensive, as Oakland learned when it tried to ban them not long ago. The plastics industry took the city to court and won a decision that forces the city to complete an environmental impact review before implementing its ban. The EIR is estimated to cost at least $100,000.
