.Stem Cell Grants Announced

Well, the nonprofit that governs California’s $3 billion stem cell research fund announced its first grants yesterday, and we can’t say that Berkeley was in the top tier, exactly. The university got $20 million to help build stem cell labs in the new Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences, but Stanford, UC-San Francisco, the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, UC Irvine, and the University of Southern California all got substantially larger grants. Stanford, in particular, led the way with $43 million. But hey, money’s money. Now, let’s see some Frankenzygotes spilling out! We plan to present with Alzheimers in about thirty years, so get crackin’, UC eggheads!
