.Rival Developers Try to Build on Oakland Army Base Again

What the hell, let’s jump through these hoops one more time. The Trib reports that the Oakland City Council will formally ask four different development teams to submit plans to develop the old army base in West Oakland. Just for the record: Oakland’s had control of the army base for thirteen years, and has yet to do anything with the land. Years were wasted arguing with the Port over which piece of the base the city ought to get. The Wayans brothers wanted to build a film studio down at the dilapidated old base, and everyone got in a tizzy over the prospect of filming Scary Movie 17 inside city limits. But that plan died as well. So here we are, gamely gearing up to try again. Remarkably, four development teams are willing to play ball, despite the grim economic times. Sometime today, the City Council will ask them to draw up plans to build a delightful complex of office space, industrial space, and port logistical facilities. Oh, and a produce market, if you don’t mind. And could you throw in a film studio while you’re at it?
