The Tri-Valley Herald has a fun piece on everyone’s favorite ex-congressman, Richard Pombo, who did his level best to buy the Tracy mayor’s race for pro-growth candidate Brent Ives. According to the Herald, Ives spent just $40,000 to beat his slow-growth opponent, Celeste Garamendi. But HAT PAC, a political action committee with ties to Pombo, raised and spent another $200,000, or five times what Ives personally raised. And how much did Garamendi spend on her campaign? $18,000. As Robert Gammon reported in his 2005 profile, the Pombo family owns hundreds of acres of prime real estate in and around Tracy, but slow-growth efforts have inconvenienced the family’s plans to develop and sell the property.
