It’s official: Kernighan, who has represented District 2 since 2005, was unanimously elected to replace Larry Reid as president of the Oakland City Council during a special meeting this morning at City Hall.
(In case you missed it: This is a good thing! Read more about why here.)
In other news from the meeting, Outgoing Council President Reid will be the vice-mayor, following a motion introduced by new Councilmember Noel Gallo and a unanimous vote. Councilmember at Large Kaplan was also unanimously elected President pro tem of the council, after a motion was put forward by Kernighan. The council’s three new city councilmembers — Gallo, Dan Kalb, and Lynette Gibson-McElhaney — as well as the school board were also officially inaugurated, as was City Attorney Barbara Parker.
