.Oakland To Tax Pot

The Oakland City Council is on the verge of taxing medical marijuana sales, according to the Trib. Cannabis club owners look like they’re on board; the only question appears to be how high the tax will be. Some, including Council members Jean Quan and Nancy Nadel, are proposing $14 per $1,000 of medical pot sold, while others want it higher. Vice Mayor Ignacio De La Fuente is proposing $24 per $1,000. But James Anthony, an attorney for Harborside Health Center, one of four legal pot dispensaries in the city, warns that his clients will oppose the higher tax plan. The tax may go on the July 21 ballot. Whatever the tax rate ends up being, it makes sense because it further legitimizes medicinal marijuana.
