.Oakland Scores $6.8 Million for Poor Kids

Mayor Ron Dellums announced yesterday that the City of Oakland won a $5.7 million grant and Unity Council, a Fruitvale nonprofit, received $1.1 million in federal funds for childcare programs designed for struggling families. According to the Trib, the federal funding is earmarked for Early Head Start and Head Start programs, which serve children up to five years old. The grants should greatly help working parents who can’t afford the high cost of traditional childcare programs. The childcare grants are just the latest in a series of federal funds secured by the Dellums administration in the past year.
