Most Slothful Person, Place, or Thing: Waiting for the little white man who never comes

The traffic light at 7th and Center streets in West Oakland

Ever noticed how your friends from West Oakland are often late? They have due cause. Ever had to wait for the traffic light at 7th and Center — you know, the one between the West Oakland BART station and the Mandela Gateway apartments? Ever notice that it never turns green? That the little white man never tells you to walk? That, in fact, there is no little white man? You can stand there and count backward from a thousand, watch a fleet of Cadillacs and Buicks drift by, and slog through the extended radio remix of Alicia Keys’ “My Boo” — and you’ll still be staring at a big red hand. Most people actually end up jaywalking at that corner, which is kind of a stupid thing to do on 7th — especially when you’re just spitting distance from a freeway exit. After all, the traffic light may be slothful, but the cars sure aren’t.
